TAKASHI HOMMA - Lot 148
TAKASHI HOMMA The narcissistic city Mack, 2016. In this new work, Takashi Homma constructs a city image by image, using fragments collected in the metropolitan areas of Japan and the United States. Often employing image grids, Homma assembles irregular views - a parallel Hiroshima Peace Museum or another Empire State Building. The shattered city shown on these pages is unpopulated, composed solely of buildings that stare at each other in silence; messages sometimes appear - a scribbled word or a stenciled number. All the images reveal themselves as photographs, as Homma turns to the city, but also to the principles of photography itself in inverted images that allude to the camera obscura. Homma does not seek to index a city as such, but to render a world of shadows, the unconscious of a city caught in a dark chamber, suspended in the camera's box.
