Two very small samples of the heat shield from the Russian s - Lot 371
Two very small samples of the heat shield from the Russian space shuttle Buran, which flew only once, unmanned, on November 15, 1988. Burane was a Soviet reusable spacecraft program developed in response to the American space shuttles, but the political situation in the USSR and the project’s excessive cost quickly brought the program to an end. These two samples (5 mm and 1 cm) are made of high-purity quartz fiber ceramic capable of withstanding temperatures exceeding 1,500°. Also included are two 3.5-cm-long pins from the Buran shuttle. One of them bears the inscription “CCCP.” RUSSIA
